Any astute food marketer will tell you that brand storytelling isn’t just a trend—it’s a proven strategy that creates emotional resonance, builds brand loyalty, and forges meaningful connections with consumers. We see this reflected in the origin stories brands share, as well as in the personal experiences influencers post on social media. Storytelling makes products more relatable, fostering deeper bonds with people.

Storytelling is a powerful tool that resonates across all industries, but for brands in the food and beverage sector, it offers a unique opportunity to strengthen their identity and add deeper meaning to their products. Throughout history, food has been a vital source of connection for people, fostering the bonds we long for. Nourishing and comforting, food reflects our identities and personal stories. Our favorite dishes and treasured recipes carry stories that unite us, creating deep, meaningful connections.

With that in mind, let me share a story with you about flavor inspiration.

It starts with the idea that some of the most breakthrough innovations come from solving personal challenges, and ends with our latest flavor creations. Each concept developed by our innovation team during a recent ideation session has a personal backstory. Inspired by travel, tradition, daily rituals, and global curiosity, these flavors draw from our team’s own lives, memories, cravings, and unmet needs. The result? Unique, on-trend flavor concepts that prove some of the most powerful innovations come from lived experiences.

Let me tell you about a few of these new “storied flavors.”

Taro Milk Tea – The scientist behind this concept loves the sweetness of milk tea but has to really watch her sugar consumption. She says, “I love milk tea. My favorite time to enjoy a cup is later in the evening. [But] the high sugar content makes it hard to keep my glucose level in range and steady, as I go to sleep later in the evening. I think if I could make a drink just as satisfying using whey protein and reduced sugar technology, I could enjoy it in the evening as protein allows for a steady blood glucose.”

Without reservations, this tea is straight up delightful. That’s the first thing that hit me about it. Then you notice it has the added benefits of less than half the sugar content of existing market products as well as added protein, which is uncommon in milk teas. While the Taro Milk Tea satisfies our scientist’s desires, it’s also in line with current trends. Taro strikes the perfect balance between global curiosity and approachable taste. It’s exotic enough to feel adventurous yet comforting and subtly sweet, making it ideal for mainstream fusion. Plus, its iconic purple color has an aesthetic, social media-worthy appeal.

Mezcal Tamarind Margarita – Inspired by travels to Mexico and a favorite cocktail, this flavor concept transforms a vibrant drinking experience into a bold, snackable chip. Tangy tamarind and citrus open bright and tart, while a smoky mezcal note adds earthy depth and a touch of intrigue to each crisp bite. Designed for those who crave flavor with a personality, it’s a layered, lively snack that brings cocktail culture to the chip aisle.

Personally, I found this flavor profile just delicious – bright and tangy with just a hint of smokiness. It’s craveable with a complex, yet approachable profile, even for those that don’t typically enjoy mezcal. Simultaneously sweet and tart, tamarind is an interesting flavor (and ingredient) that I’d love to see highlighted in more savory applications.

Marionberry BBQ – This concept evokes a sense of place for its creator. It was inspired by trips to the Pacific Northwest where they first encountered the unforgettable taste of fresh marionberries. This juicy, sweet-tart berry variety while common in the Pacific Northwest is difficult to find outside the region.

In this seasoning, ripe marionberry brings a juicy berry sweetness, that is balanced by tangy vinegar, warm spice and a trace of smoke giving it a modern BBQ twist. The real showstopping element in this concept is the marionberry flavor. It’s incredibly fresh, distinctively aromatic and holds its own alongside the savory, BBQ profile.

This flavor combination is special because of the regionality of the marionberry. There is a huge opportunity to feature regional fruit flavors and seasonal flavors. Not only do they offer a sense of novelty and excitement, but they help tell a story and provide a sense of authenticity.

Mango Ginger Turmeric Wellness Shot – This concept was born from a desire to have a quick, nutrient-dense way to start the day. It has a feel-good flavor with global influences that transform a morning health habit into something craveable. Flavor, function, and ritual come together in this wellness shot. The custom flavor was designed to be bold and revitalizing. Tropical mango delivers a juicy sweetness, which is balanced by the sharp warmth of ginger and earthy backbone of turmeric.

This wellness shot does a great job showcasing how ginger can be used to add heat or a “spicy” element to food and beverages. It also exemplifies the trend of consumers seeking new sources of heat or spice to quench their desire for more complex flavor profiles.
